PSY 101: Introduction to Psychology with an Islamic Lens is an innovative course that blends the foundational theories and principles of psychology with insights from Islamic teachings and scholarship. This unique approach aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of human behavior, cognition, and emotion, while incorporating the ethical, spiritual, and moral dimensions emphasized in Islam. Over the course of 14 weeks, students will explore key psychological concepts, such as development, personality, learning, and mental health, through both contemporary psychological science and Islamic psychological thought. This course seeks to bridge the gap between modern psychology and Islamic perspectives, offering students an opportunity to appreciate the compatibility and potential synergies between these fields. By examining psychological topics in light of Islamic teachings, students will gain a deeper understanding of the human psyche, enhance their personal growth, and develop a framework for addressing psychological issues with compassion and wisdom.
In addition to traditional psychological theories, this course will introduce students to Islamic psychological insights on the self (nafs), the heart (qalb), the soul (ruh), and the intellect (‘aql), drawing from the Quran, Hadith, and works of Muslim scholars. Students will engage with case studies, contemporary research, and classical Islamic texts, fostering a holistic view of human nature that honors both scientific inquiry and spiritual understanding.
